About sBooks
sBooks is a web-based e-book platform for sociable reading. We hope to ignite communities and economies around the playful and serious "book work" of enthralling visions, profound ideas, and just plain fun. What makes sBooks special?
Read anywhere
When you've discovered or purchased an sBook, you can read it on your desktop, tablet, cellphone, or e-reader (Kindle, Nook, whatever). Whether through the web-based sBooks reader or by automatic conversion to e-reader formats, you can access your sBooks anywhere.
Buy anywhere
The open sBooks platform is publisher independent: anyone can publish an sBook by just hosting it on a website (though we can help with that). Some publishers will charge for or restrict access, but the underlying platform is open by design (just like the Internet!)
Browse naturally
sBooks include information about their structure and meaning which can streamline reading, browsing and navigation.
Enrich and share
An sBook which dances from device to device can be enriched with comments, links, tags, or highlights that move along with it. These glosses can be shared with others (if everyone agrees) appearing in their books alongside their own glosses.
Create communities
It's simple to create reading circles around a book, inviting friends, colleagues, or classmates to discuss the book from inside the book.
Add value
Anyone can metapublish a public overlay on an sBook, adding his or her own notes and explanations, rich media and links to the wider web. Readers choose which overlays to apply to their copies: some are free and open while others may cost money or have other kinds of restricted access.
Search smarter
sBooks contain knodules — lightweight knowledge bases — which help you search and browse using tags provided by publishers, third parties, or friends and heroes from the reader's own communities.
